White silica sand has always been an important part of the industrial picture in Pacific. The sand was mined by blasting with nitroglycerin, which workmen carried (very carefully) to the mines in a little glass bottle.

The Pacific Glass and Sand Company later was known as The Valley Park Sand and Gravel Company. One of the largest fires in the area occurred about 1912 when its building burned.
