The Purina name and iconic Checkerboard logo were founded in 1902 by Willam H. Danforth. Then named Ralston Purina, its primary focus was producing animal feed generally referred to as “Chow.” At the urging of Mr. Danforth’s son, Donald, the first-ever canine nutrition center devoted exclusively to pet nutrition and care opened at Purina Farms in Gray Summit, MO in 1926. Donald believed no product should feature the Checkerboard logo until it was proven worthy through research at the Farm. In the same year, Ralston Purina launched Purina Dog Chow beginning a legacy and focus on animal health and nutrition.

Sitting on over 300 acres, the Visitor Center at Purina Farms, established in 1986, allows visitors the opportunity to explore the human-animal connection with a mission to build a community that helps pets and people realize their full potential together. Purina Farms property is also the birthplace of the Incredible Dog Challenge and the home of the Purina Event Center, a premier facility built from the ground up specifically for dog and cat related events. Today you may visit Purina Farms (dogs included!) to enjoy live canine performances, up-close encounters with farm animals, educational exhibits, dog and cat shows, special events, and more.
